Saturday 21 September 2024, 10:00 - 14:00 (last entry 13:30)

It is with great delight that we announce the completion of the major restoration project to the historic Grade II* listed Crystal Palace Subway, the access point for first-class rail passengers to the Crystal Palace, in time for its 160th anniversary in 2025.

A new roof over the East Courtyard and extensive repairs to the walls, floor, steps and entrances have breathed new life into the Victorian subway. The structure dates from 1865 and is the most substantial survivor of the huge Crystal Palace complex which was dramatically lost to fire in 1936.

Entry is free and this is a self-led visit. There is no need to pre-book – you can arrive on the day. Please note last entry is 13:30.

Visitors will be invited to explore this spectacular underground entrance to the Crystal Palace, originally used for rail passengers.

Please note that we anticipate this to be very popular so there may be queues, please arrive early to avoid disappointment.  There will be other opportunities in the coming months to see the Subway so check the Trust's website or sign up to our e-newsletter, The Transmitter: https://www.crystalpalaceparktrust.org/sign-up-to-our-newsletter

This event is suitable for all ages, please ensure children are supervised at all times. Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcomed. Food and drinks are not permitted.

Getting to the Subway

The entrance to the Subway can be found at the top of the steps and ramp from Crystal Palace Parade, behind the Bus Station. WhatThreeWords: https://w3w.co/cliff.chops.lift

The nearest train station is Crystal Palace Station and is a 15-minute walk. Please note this walk includes a steep hill.

Full details on travelling to the park can be found on the Trust's website: https://www.crystalpalaceparktrust.org/topics/getting-here

Access notes

Please note there is currently no step-free access to the Subway and access is via two flights of stairs with handrails on either side. The Subway itself has uneven flooring and light changes from bright to dim at various points.

The Subway has no public toilets – the nearest facilities can be found at the Concert Platform or the National Sports Centre, both approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the Subway and involve stairs or steep paths.

If you have any questions, please contact the Crystal Palace Park Trust team via events@crystalpalaceparktrust.org or phone 020 8050 7120 (weekdays 09:00-17:00).
